SINHARAJA RAINFOREST

The Sinharaja forest is the only undisturbed rainforest
left in Sri Lanka. It is about 9000 hectares inextent. Many
of the plant are very rare. Over60%of the tree species are
found only in the lowland w-e t zone of Sri Lanka. If these
species of trees are a-llowed to get destroyed, the world
would lose themaltogether. So it is important that much effort
is meto conserve this rich, valuable and fragile habitat. The
Sinharaja rainforest is the largest rainforest re-serve in Sri
Lanka.In 1840 Sinharaja became a crownproperty. In 1988
the Sinharaja was made A NationalWilderness area. In 1989
UNESCO included the Sinhar-aja Forest In the World Heritage
list, as the first Natio-nal Heritage of Sri Lanka. The Sinharaja
forest is home to many rare animals, bird, butterflies, insects,
reptiles and trees.Ferns and m-osses grow well as the climate is
hum-id because of He-avy rainfall.

Coral Reefs

Coral reefs add beauty to the sea world. It is also
a blessing because The reefs reduce the speed of
the ocean waves and mini-mize coastal Erosion.
There are several factors that are used measure the
value of a coralReef. Its bio –diversity, the area it
covers, the number of coral varieties And the percentage
of the live coral covering are some of them. The
Hikkaduwa coral reef is one of our Sri Lanka treasures.
The Bouna Vista Coral reef which is situated a few
milesaway from the Galle town and The corals at
Unawatuna are the other places in the Southern coast,
where We find coral.
The Sri Lankan coastal line is rich with this ‘little
Sinharaja’ at the bottom Of the sea. Most species of
coral are vanishing rapidly because of the Destructive
fishing and sewage disposal. We must protect coral reefs,
one of our natural treasures.

Handicraft In Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka has a heritage of handcraft. All craft are
made by hand. These handcrafts include weaving cloths,
making baskets, leather items pottery, jewellery woodwo
-rk,brasswork and masks etc.Our handicraft are an imp
-ortant part of the craft tradition of our country. We mu
-st protect and maintain the flower of our heritage, so
that they don't disapper with time

Earlier these craft were apart of our day to day life.
Now too they play a role. For example,we light the oil lam
-p when we start some new venture. The lamp has niches
for nine wicks. These are meant to be for the 'navagraha'.
But now the lamps are decorated with jasmine flowers li
-ke an offering made in the Hindu temple. The traditiona
-l lamp had a rooster at the top.Thise is now sometimes
replaced with other symbols. So tradition is countinude
with change.

Wood carving is a very popular handicraft even to d
-ay, in our country. The Embakke temple built in the 14 th
century is famous the world over for its carved wooden pil
-lars intricast designs.

Masks are also imaginative creations of the village cr
-aftsmen coming down from ancient times.Masks are mad
-e of wood and used for plays.Masks are carved by coutom
and tradition.Ambalangoda is famouse for its mask making
industry.

Dumbara mats,jewellery,rattan baskets etc. are
othertraditional arts and products that show our traditional
arts and crafts. Some handicrafts are limited to certain areas in
the island; it is because of the availability of the special mat
-erial used and other historical factors. Most brassware is u
-sed as decorative ornaments. These are very popular as gi
-ft and souvenirs.Pilimathalawa is a place famous for for br
-ass work.
